Study Break: Museum Helps Interns Reach Dream Job
By NewsCentral Staff
June 28, 2011While the Museum of Arts and Sciences is teaching kids all kinds of things over the summer, lets not forget about summer interns who are also learning a few things.
Public Relations Director Amanda Respess says "An internship here is never going to be sending faxes or running and getting coffee. It's always going to be hands on. We need a lot of help."
Jeniffer Samms studied art history and is now a Grad student at the University of Florida.
Her internship entails giving kids a hands-on experience with the museum's artworks without ruining the delicate pieces.
"Susan Mays who is the education curator came up with an idea for bags to have these tactile interactions for the families and the children to come in so they can look at and find the painting that has that paint on it and feel it," she says.
Downstairs intern Matthew Beitz does research for the museum. He looks into ways to obtain grants and learns what it takes to run a nonprofit.
Beitz says "it's really amazing how much the government and corporations want to give back to the community. I never really realized that until I started here and started looking around."
He eventually wants to do research for the federal government. He says this internship has brought him one step closer.
“They learn how to do the tasks and get info and work on the project and the museum benefits from the fact that they are helping us out because we probably don’t have the staff to do right now,” says Amanda Respess.
